It was a Monday morning at the bank. Amaka had been standing since 7:30am. By 10 o'clock her back was burning, her feet were swelling inside her shoes, and there was nowhere to sit — not one chair. She thought about sitting on the dirty floor. She thought about going home. But she needed that transaction done.

That evening, it was the bus stop. Another hour on her feet, watching bus after bus pass full. She got home too tired to cook, too tired to talk, and went to bed knowing tomorrow would be the same.

And it wasn't just the bank and the bus stop. Hours on her feet at the hospital, waiting for her name to be called. Standing at the market while the seller attended to everyone else. Owambes where the chairs finished before she arrived. Bending over a basin of laundry until her back cried. Standing behind her shop counter from morning till night. Everywhere she went, there was never a seat for Amaka.

Then one Sunday, a friend pulled something round and flat from her bag, opened it in seconds — and sat down. Right there. Comfortable.

Today, Amaka doesn't stand and suffer anymore. Bank queue, bus stop, hospital, market, owambe, laundry day, her shop — she pulls out her stool and sits. She never knew how much standing was stealing from her… until she stopped.
